Massachusetts maintains a licensing program for environmental professionals who oversee assessments and cleanups in the waste site cleanup program, which addresses soil and ground-water contamination at non-Superfund sites in the Commonwealth. Some of these environmental professionals happen to be geologists, but many others are environmental, chemical, or civil engineers; chemists; environmental scientists; risk assessors, and associated disciplines.

Michigan

Registration Status:

Michigan does not require licensure or registration of geologists. Sections of the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act, 1994 PA 451, as amended, set standards for persons preparing or reviewing certain geologic reports or data in specific instances.

Bills have been introduced in the Legislature to require a person engaged in the public practice of geology to be licensed as a geologist. The bills would also establish a Board of Professional Geologists, set fees for licensure, and require the State Geologist to be licensed. No action has been taken on the bills.
